Permission To Be Me

By J. M. Kendall

I've been carrying mountains in a paper-thin soul.
Smiling through the questions nobody asks at all.
Learned to wear silence like a suit and tie
While every honest feeling stayed locked inside.

Everybody said a man should never break.
Keep his fears buried, keep his hands steady.
So, I became a fortress nobody could enter, but nobody told me a fortress gets lonely.

And I'm tired.
Tired of performing strength every day.
Tired of pretending I'm okay.
Tired of hearing "be a man"
When all I need is someone who understands.

I don't need a kingdom; I don't need a crown.
I don't need the whole world to turn itself around.
I just want permission to be who I am; to say that I'm hurting without losing my stand.
To stand before somebody without armor, without fear, and know they'll still love me when they see the real man here.
Give me permission…permission to be me

I've sat in crowded rooms feeling invisible.
Shaking hands while my heart grew distant.
People know my title, my work, my name, but nobody knows the battles behind my face.

I've been the shoulder everybody leaned upon.
The one who listened while carrying his own storm.
And sometimes the strongest man in the room is the one barely holding himself together.

And I'm worn…from carrying expectations I never chose.
From hiding tears nobody's supposed to know.
From being told weakness is a sin when honesty is where healing begins.

Maybe courage isn't never falling down.
Maybe courage is letting somebody see you now.
Maybe strength isn't carrying every weight alone.
Maybe strength is finally saying.
"I can't do this on my own" and maybe love begins the moment I stop pretending

I don't need perfection.
I don't need applause.
I don't need another mask.
To cover all these scars.

I just need acceptance without conditions attached.
A place where my truth doesn't have to hide its tracks.
To stand before somebody with nothing left to defend.
And find a safe place to simply be again.

Permission…to breathe.
Permission…to feel.
Permission…to finally be real.
Permission to be me.

about

J.M. Kendall portrait

J. M. Kendall is a man who stands at the edge of emotional exile, quietly searching for a place where authenticity is not punished. In his work, the poet reveals the silent burden many men carry — the expectation to remain unshaken, unemotional, and endlessly strong. His voice is restrained yet aching, shaped by years of being told what he should and should not feel. Rather than a dramatic outcry, his poems speak through exhaustion, vulnerability, and the painful recognition that loneliness can exist even in crowded rooms.

Kendall presents masculinity not as power, but as confinement. Every line reflects the struggle of a man denied the freedom to express hurt, tenderness, or emotional need without judgment. He longs not for fame, wealth, or escape, but for something far more difficult to find: acceptance without performance.

Ultimately, his poems are portraits of a man searching for emotional permission — to exist honestly, to speak openly, and to be loved without condition. His greatest desire is profoundly human: to stand before another person and finally feel safe enough to simply be himself.

Pray

By J. M. Kendall

What do you do when your age, experience, and wisdom intimidate?
What do you do when your achievement, effort, and persistence shine?
What do you do when your performance, planning, and preparation excel?
What do you do when your achievement, effort, and persistence inspire?
What do you do when your determination, focus, and success flourish?
What do you do when your execution opportunity and preparation align?
What do you do when your goals, habits, and results prosper?
What do you do when your faith, patience and perseverance waver?
Pray.

Longing

By J. M. Kendall

I'm longing for a place
Where I can be me.
No expectations
Other than those I impose on myself,
To care for those I love,
To support those I like,
To be with those I wish.
I share what bothers me, but I'm told,
“That doesn’t bother you.”
“You can’t be hurt by words.”
“You don’t have emotions.”
Anguish and tears are disallowed.
And so
I realized the deepest form of loneliness
isn’t being alone.
It’s being around people
who won’t let you be yourself.
My goal is to find someone.
Anyone.
Somewhere.
Anywhere.
With whom…
I can be me.

Punishing

By J. M. Kendall

I pine for all the hurt I cause to those who seek consistency.
I hurt for all the anguish I pass on to others who look for peace.
I anguish for all the resentment toward those who search for love.
I grieve for all the aching I have caused...
As I pause for an answer to my questions.
Waiting is punishing.

Living

By J. M. Kendall

I die on the inside
each day, waiting for the next
to brighten my path,
to confirm my decisions,
and to bring out the best I have to offer.
Similarities subtract.
If two are the same, one is not needed.
Differences compound.
If two are different, they complement.
They build together in a close, sacred bond.
No soul survives alone,
and no heart truly beats alone.
To love is to give breath
while finding breath within yourself.
Loving is living.

Hoping

By J. M. Kendall

Forever like love
wanting is the nourishment of life.
Caring is the sustenance of the soul.
Being is the nutrition needed to survive.
Day in and day out.
When the sun goes down
and I am left with only thoughts and prayers
I wonder what the future holds.
I pause…
Hoping.

Being

By J. M. Kendall

To be or not to be?
A comical way to live one’s life.
The answer to the question is to be.
Conscious presence.
Living reality.
Experiencing the occupation of life as oneself.
Being strong.
Being valiant.
Being vulnerable.
Being.

Melting

by J.M. Kendall

Sitting still and calm
While neural activity shears inside.
No attention.
No behaviors.
No connectivity.
No control.
No functioning.
No thoughts.

I fight those brown eyes.
And I see me.

Melting.

Missing

by J.M. Kendall

I miss…
Your ears...
Your eyes...
Your hair...
Your nose...
Your neck...
Your smile...
Your touch...
Your voice...
...you.
